A fixed focal length lens does not change at all. With an unchanging focal lens the only way we can get a close up is to move closer to our subject. But we should not get too close or our subject’s features may get distorted. An optical zoom lens is a accurate zoom. Its focal length changes and the zoom device itself extend and retract so an image is magnified by the lens itself. An optical zoom generates the best quality images.

A digital zoom does not produce proper zoom. It is a replicated zoom that enlarges the central portion of an image in the camera. The actual measurement lengthwise of the lens does not change. Digital zoom fabricate images with condensed visual feature. Single Lens Reflex digital cameras recognize a wide variety of interchangeable lenses. Some lenses used with a 35mm film SLR may be well-matched with the same brand SLR, though features such as auto-focus may not work if the lens is old.
