Optical audio cable or TOSLINK

Optical audio cable is optical fiber cable which is used in audio equipments. The connection which these cables make with equipment is through a socket known as digital optical socket. Optical audio cable carries an audio signal which is digital in nature. Different audio equipments with which optical audio cables are compatible include CD players, MiniDisc and DAT recorders. With the increasing popularity of optical audio cables they are also being used in gaming consoles. There are many different ways by which optical audio cables can be made. One way is to use optical fibers made of plastic. They are comparatively cheap and thus the resultant optical audio cable will be available at cheaper prices. Other way which is quite expensive use optical fibers made of quartz glass. Apart from money different materials are used to meet varying requirements of bandwidth.

These optical audio cables were first invented by TOSHIBA with the name TOSLINK. Even today many people refer to these optical audio cables with this name. When these optical cables were invented their use was quite specific. They were capable of performing only a few tasks. But with the advancement and new inventions, the standards of the optical audio cables got upgraded and they became capable of performing manifold tasks. Today these optical audio cables can support a large number of audio formats like true HD, Dolby digital plus and the list keeps on increasing.
